New YorkWhat:    We all know that the holidays can be stressful, but imagine how stressful they are for turkeys! So on Wednesday in New York, a giant “turkey” will lead PETA members in a special Thanksgiving tasting of free vegan Tofurky sandwiches and giveaway of turkey-shaped stress-relief squeezies—PETA’s way of encouraging everyone to make the holidays less stressful for turkeys by celebrating with delicious vegan meals.

When:    Wednesday, November 15, 12 noon

Where:    172 W. 42nd St. (at the intersection with Seventh Avenue), New York City

The giveaway will take place next to one of PETA’s new ads along the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade route. The ads show a turkey’s face next to the words “I’m ME, Not MEAT. Kids: Ask Your Parents About Going Vegan.”

“The holidays can be a nightmare for gentle turkeys, who are killed by the millions for Thanksgiving dinners alone,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is encouraging everyone to see birds as sensitive individuals and give them a break this Thanksgiving by choosing hearty, healthy vegan roasts.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that vegan foods, such as Tofurky products, spare turkeys the agony of being hung by their feet from metal shackles and dragged through an electrified bath before their throats are slit, often while they’re still conscious. Vegan holiday roasts are also packed with protein and free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol.
