Massive Support Across USA for Enacting Clean Dream Act This Year

Dreamers and allies are kicking off another vibrant week of action in our nation’s capital and beyond, demanding that Congress do its job and pass the Dream Act before the end of the year.

From California and Ohio to Iowa and Washington, DC the positive contributions of America’s Dreamers will be on display all across the nation, and particularly in Washington, DC as Congress prepares to wrap up its end of the year business.

Members of Congress cannot and must not go home for the holidays without voting to fix the status of America’s Dreamers.

Events will be taking place in Washington, DC; California; Connecticut; Iowa; Illinois; Massachusetts; Michigan; Minnesota; Nevada; New Jersey; New York; Ohio; Oregon; Pennsylvania; and Texas – and are listed chronologically below (all time zones in local time)

Friday, December 1 (Iowa, Pennsylvania)

8:30 am CT: Des Moines, Iowa

Immigrant youth and community leaders urged Senator Grassley, Senator Ernst, and Representative Young by presenting them with a banner on behalf of Dreamers and TPS holders from across the state of Iowa. Speakers shared their immigration stories and discuss the benefits the Dream Act and an extension of the TPS program would bring to Iowa.

12 pm ET: Lancaster, PA

Immigrant youth and their allies hosted a call-a-thon with support from local community members to urge Senator Pat Toomey. Dreamers also shared their immigration stories, discussed the benefits the Dream Act could have on Pennsylvania, and called on their friends and family to also call on Speaker Ryan to support the Dream Act.

Saturday, December 2 (New York; California; New Jersey)

12 pm ET: New York, NY

Women’s March, United We Dream, and dozens of grassroots activists will lead Dream Killers – a performance art protest – in Central Park to demand that Congress pass the clean Dream Act before their holiday break. The large scale visual demonstration will take place on Saturday, December 2 at 12PM EST.

12pm ET: Paterson, NJ

Oasis: A Haven for Women and Children, local elected officials, immigrant youth, and allies will gather to share their stories, discuss why the Dream Act is important for New Jersey, and paint a banner in support of Dreamers across the state to be delivered to Representative Frelinghuysen’s office. Attendees will also make calls to the offices Representative Frelinghuysen and Speaker Paul Ryan’s offices and urge them to pass the Dream Act by the end of the year.

1pm PT: Vista, CA

Join the ACLU on Saturday, December 2 to defend the Dream for all Californians and urge Congressman Issa to pass a clean Dream Act now. 1pm: Meet Up 1:30pm: Canvass, Demonstrate 3pm: March and Rally

December 4th and 5th Washington, DC

UWD/SEIU will organize a delegation to the airport to greet members of Congress as they return to the Capitol.

Faith, Education, Business and Community Leaders Speak Out for Dreamers at Story-sharing Marathon on Capitol Hill

Location: Area 10, behind the House Triangle, U.S. Capitol Hill

11 am ET: Washington, DC

Prayer Vigil/Rally for Dream Act

Evangelical leaders and Dreamers from across the country from the  Christian Community Development Association, Bread for the World, Sojourners, Evangelicals for Social Action, Urban Strategies, Red Letter Christians, World Relief, Freedom Road, & the Matthew 25 Coalition, Church World Service will hold a press conference and prayer rally led by pastors, alongside DACA recipients from their congregations, will share statements, pray and ceremonially take the 1,000’s of dreams collected from around the country and commit to bring them together to Congress. Follow up prayer outside Capitol offices is scheduled after the rally.

Dream Act LGBTQ Press Conference

6:30pm CT: Austin, TX

Texas Senator Kirk Watson and State Representatives Eddie Rodriguez, Donna Howard, Celia Israel and Gina Hinojosa will join Austin-area Dreamers to discuss how the end of DACA is already affecting Dreamers and to urge Congress to pass a clean Dream Act.

Tuesday, December 5 (Washington, DC; Ohio)

10am ET: Washington, DC

Evangelical leaders and Dreamers from across the country from the  Christian Community Development Association, Bread for the World, Sojourners, Evangelicals for Social Action, Urban Strategies, Red Letter Christians, World Relief, Freedom Road, & the Matthew 25 Coalition, Church World Service will gather outside of Speaker Ryan’s Washington DC offices with the dreams and prayers for a collective action advocating for the Dream Act.

1pm ET: Washington, DC

On December 5, 2017, over a hundred Black and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) immigrants will join forces for a day of action in Washington, DC to demand the passage of a clean Dream Act and a permanent solution for Temporary Protective Status (TPS) holders. Participants will visit Congressional and Senate offices after the press conference.

4pm ET: Cincinnati, OH

Rally for a Clean Dream Act outside Senator Rob Portman’s (R-OH) office.

7pm CT: Houston, TX

Faith leaders and members of the immigrant community will share a dinner at U.S. Congressman John Culberson district office to tell the Congressman that his community needs a clean Dream Act now.

December 4 – 8

United We Dream will have a continuous presence in DC with Dreamers from across the country until Congress enacts a Dream Act this year.  Each day Dreamers will  lead, join and participate in creative actions to street the urgency of passing a Dream Act.

Thursday, December 7

9am ET: Washington, D.C.

We Belong Together’s “Dream for the Holidays” campaign will deliver letters written to Congress from children and youth throughout the country. A delegation of kids and teens will deliver letters sharing their “Dream for the Holidays” with their Representatives in Congress and leadership in the House and Senate. The letters  urge Congress to pass a clean DREAM Act and to protect immigrant families threatened by the elimination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) before Congress goes on break for the holidays. Members of Congress will receive letters or “coal” depending on whether they’ve been “naughty or nice” to children and immigrant families this year.
