Vancouver, B.C.What:    PETA supporters wearing 8-foot-tall inflatable “baby” costumes—whose bibs proclaim, “Milk Is for Babies: Dump Dairy”—will descend on the BC Dairy Industry Conference in Vancouver on Thursday to inform dairy-drinking adults that cows produce milk only to feed their own babies and that they’re forcibly impregnated over and over again. Protesters will also brandish giant boob-shaped balloons and “baby bottles” to drive home the maternal message.

When:    Thursday, December 7, 12 noon

Where:    Vancouver Convention Centre West, 1055 Canada Pl., Vancouver

“Every carton of milk represents a lifetime of violation and deprivation for the cows who are artificially inseminated and forbidden from caring for their calves,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on anyone who values the bond between a mother and her baby to dump dairy ‘products’ and switch to vegan milks, yogurts, and cheeses.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that newborn calves are torn away from their mothers within 24 hours after birth and that mother cows have been heard calling for their stolen calves for days. The calves’ sensitive horn buds are burned off with hot irons or caustic paste. Female cows develop painful sores from spending their lives standing on concrete floors while they’re milked two or three times a day for 305 days a year, until they’re killed at around 5 years of age to be used for cheap meat.
