PETA’s Provocative Display Will Give ‘Seafood & Wine Festival’ Attendees Food for Thought About Eating Animals

Portland, Ore. – What: Wearing claws and almost nothing else, a bodypainted PETA “lobster” will lie on a giant plate—complete with to-scale cutlery, a garnish of cilantro, and a side of vegan butter—right outside the 13th Annual Portland Seafood & Wine Festival on Saturday. The provocative protest—which comes less than a month after Switzerland passed a law making it illegal to boil live lobsters—will tell festivalgoers, “Try to Relate to Who’s on Your Plate.”

“PETA is challenging people to think about what ‘seafood’ really is, and that’s the corpse of an abused animal who didn’t want to die,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “With all the delicious vegan lobster, fish-free fillets, and crabless cakes available these days, it’s never been easier to go vegan.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that lobsters are intelligent and unique individuals who use complex signals to establish social relationships and take long-distance seasonal journeys, often traveling up to 100 miles in a year. A PETA investigation of the Linda Bean’s Maine Lobster slaughterhouse revealed that live lobsters were impaled, torn apart, and decapitated—even as their legs continued to move.
