Washington – Holding a sign proclaiming, “Trudeau: End Canada’s Commercial Seal Slaughter,” a PETA member wearing a seal costume will greet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau throughout his visit to the capital, including to Fortune‘s Most Powerful Women Summit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery on October 10. PETA is urging him to usher in a new era of compassion and fiscal responsibility by ending Canada’s subsidies of the commercial seal slaughter.

“For years, the Canadian government has poured millions in taxpayer dollars into a failing industry that shoots, bludgeons, and skins seals,” says PETA Senior Vice President of Campaigns Dan Mathews. “PETA is calling on Prime Minister Trudeau to be a true global citizen and end subsidies to the cruel commercial seal slaughter.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals our not ours to abuse in any way”—notes that the U.S., the EU, and Russia have all banned seal-derived items. PETA’s “spokeseal” has trailed Trudeau around the world.
